Live video monitoring vs. alarm monitoring

Both send a problem to a monitoring center. The difference is what the operator can see and do when the signal arrives.

What is the difference between live video monitoring and alarm monitoring?

Alarm monitoring reacts to sensors. When a door contact, motion detector or glass-break sensor trips, the alarm panel sends a signal to a central station, and an operator calls your contacts or requests a dispatch without seeing what caused it.

Live video monitoring uses your cameras. Agents see the event as it happens, confirm whether it is a real threat, and can speak through on-site speakers to stop trespassers before calling police with a verified description. Many businesses use both: alarms for the building and live video for lots, yards and perimeters.

When alarm monitoring is enough

A traditional intrusion alarm is a solid fit for an office or store with locked doors and nothing valuable outside. It protects the building envelope reliably and is simple for staff to arm and disarm.

  • Small offices and retail with clear entry points
  • Little or no inventory or equipment outdoors
  • You mainly need a dispatch when someone breaks in

When live video monitoring is the better choice

If your risk is outside the building, or a break-in has already happened before the alarm sounds, live video monitoring changes the outcome. Agents can see someone climbing a fence or walking the lot and warn them off while it is happening, instead of reviewing footage the next morning.

  • Vehicle, equipment or materials stored outside
  • Repeat trespassing, theft or vandalism
  • Sites with no staff after hours
  • You want to replace or reduce on-site guards

Using both

Most commercial properties do best with layers: intrusion alarms on doors and interior spaces, cameras on entrances and outdoor areas, and live video monitoring on the parts of the site where catching something early matters most. Turner Security plans, installs and monitors all three, and there are no long-term contracts on security or monitoring.

Common questions

Is live video monitoring better than a burglar alarm?

It is different. A burglar alarm detects entry into a closed building. Live video monitoring lets agents see and respond to activity outside or inside before or during an incident. Many businesses use both.

What is live talk-down?

Live talk-down is when a monitoring agent watching your cameras speaks through on-site speakers to tell a trespasser they are being watched and that police are being called. It often stops the problem before any damage is done.

Can I add live video monitoring to cameras I already have?

Often, yes. We review your current cameras and recorder and tell you what can be connected to monitoring and what would need to be upgraded.

Does live video monitoring reduce false alarms?

Yes. Because agents see each event before anyone is dispatched, harmless activity such as animals, weather or staff can be ruled out instead of triggering a dispatch.
